Frequently Asked Questions

What does an Atlas transfer case do?

This aftermarket transfer case links the transmission to the front and rear differentials, distributing power to the wheels while adding additional gear ranges for versatility on rough terrain or in harsh weather. A standard Atlas 2 is a two-speed transfer case with a High and Low gear range. The Atlas 4-speed has a high range and three separate low ranges. These transfer cases are designed for 4x4 trucks and SUVs but have also been used in sports and muscle cars, military vehicles and farming vehicles.

What are the symptoms of a bad transfer case?

Common signs of a bad transfer case include:

  • Strange noises such as whirring, grinding, humming and clicking.
  • Leaking fluid, smoke and/or a burning smell.
  • Trouble shifting gears, getting stuck in certain gears or randomly popping out of gear.
  • The 4WD engages or disengages on its own.

How to shift a 4-speed transfer case?

The Atlas 4-speed has three separate shifters. For the planetary gear, stop the vehicle, place the transmission in neutral and move the 4-speed lever forward (High) or back (Low). To shift the axles from High to Low range, roll the vehicle at 3-5 mph and shift the transmission and Front axle lever to Neutral. Put the Rear axle lever in Neutral and apply smooth but firm pressure until it shifts to Low, then put the transmission back in gear.

To return to High mode, roll at 5-20 mph and put the transmission into Neutral followed by both axle levers. Shift the Rear lever into High and re-engage the transmission gear. The Forward lever can be shifted from Neutral to High or Low anytime the vehicle is going straight forward.
