727 Jeep Torqueflite
The Chrysler 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission has long been known thought of as one of the most legendary transmissions of all time. The beginnings origins of this transmission go backbegin to in the late 1950s.
The The Chrysler 727’s development and ultimate success of the Chrysler 727 raised a lot ofmuch interest among other automobile manufacturers. AMC was one such company that reached out to Chrysler with interest in this high-performance transmission. AMC would eventually sign a lengthy contract for with Chrysler to supply transmissions for their Jeep vehicles. This long growingflourishing relationship would eventually growultimately culminate in Chrysler’s purchase of AMC to Chrysler purchasing AMC— and the Jeep brand along with it.
Development and Eearly Hhistory of the Torqueflite:
Prior to the introduction of the 727 Torqueflite transmissions, Chrysler was using automatic transmissions that utilized a dash-mounted, push-button shift selectors. The push-button design grew out of favor among with not only the general public, but also with many government municipalities and businesses. Fearing the future sale losses of future sales, Chrysler embarked on designingon its quest to design a new line of transmissions that would eventually be known as the 727/999 Torqueflite transmissions.
The Simpson Gear Set
Although Chrysler was hesitant in its initial development, it finally came to fruition after they it wasere able to obtain the licensing rights to the patented “Simpson Gear Sset”.” ThisIt was this a major breakthrough that would set forthlay the foundation forof the Torqueflite 727. The importance of Mr. Simpson’s invention should not be underestimated: as it would also lead to the development of other popular transmissions such aslike the GM TH400, Mercedes’ 3-speeds and Ford’s C6. The Simpson gear set is largely considered as one of the most major advances in the development of the modern automatic transmission and; he Mr. Simpson earned became a well-deserved millionaires of dollars through licensing fees.
Once ChyslerChrysler had the ideal working platform to work off of, eEngineers went to work to design the optimum optimal transmission. The Torqueflite 727 was one of the first Simpson-geared three3-speed automatics to use what is called “overrunning clutches”.” This design would allow for both first and second gear interaction; this feature basically eliminated the need for simultaneous release and engagement of the clutch to make the 2-3two- to three-gear change.
Design Advantages and Improvements
Further additions to this design included a large multi-plate clutch to provide smoother reactions. It is this key attribute that allows the 727 the ability to withstand higher than normal input torque and numerous transmission shift cycles of the transmission. In a nutshell, tThe 727 was designed specifically to handle frequent stop-and-go driving. Commercial-type vehicles were quick to see this advantage and. Hhence, the multitude majority of delivery and industrial vehicles were later supplied with this transmission.
AMC/Jeep
As early as 1972, AMC first startedbegan using the 727 Torqueflite in itstheir passenger cars as early as 1972. At that time, however, AMC AMC however was locked into a long- stemmingterm contract with GM to supply Turbo 400 transmissions in their its Jeeps. Jeep continued to use the TH400 until their its contract with GM ended in 1979. At that time,It was then that Jeep decided to sign a contract with Chrysler to supply a full series of Torqueflite transmissions. one One of these transmissions was the being theTorqueflite 727 for their its full-size Jjeep offeringss.
Jeep Torqueflite 727
The Jeep 727 featured the same internal components as the Mopar version; however, the front bolt pattern was unique to the AMC V8 engine pattern. This version of the 727 was only used in full-size Jeeps, such as like the J-trucks and wagoners Wagoneers, from between 1980 and -1991 . This hydraulically shifted transmission was commonly marketed by Jeep under the name “Torque-Command.”“
The 727 was used exclusively behind Jeep NP208, NP219, and NP228 transfer cases found in long wheel-based, full-size Jjeeps only. These transfer cases introduced the round circular six-6 bolt pattern that is still in use today. The Jeep 727 was always used with a 23-spline output shaft and a somewhat long adapter. These transfer cases always had thefeatured front drive shaftst that were located on the driver’s side of the vehicle.
The 727 is relatively short at 16.5” in over length; however, the tailhousing section adds an additional 6.125”. This makes theOverall, the Jeep 727 has an overall length of 22.625”. The Jeep 727 transmission weight is160 lbs. Gear rRatios are 2.45 (1st); 1.45 (2nd); and 1.00 (3rd).
