4. Borg Warner T10

Borg Warner T10 and Super T10 Transmission

Borg Warner produced many three- speed manual transmissions, but t he T10 was its first passenger car four -speed . It was created by adapting the T85 three-speed with the reverse gear and the idler moved to the tail housing, making space for a fourth gear. Early T10 transmissions debuted in the 1957 Corvette and were used in many GM and Ford products; AMC, Chrysler and even Studebaker also utilized the T10.

As horsepower levels increased, Ford designed the Toploader and GM the Muncie transmissions. GM replaced the T10 with the Muncie in 1963. Ford used both the T10 and Toploader design.

To accommodate increasing engine power, Borg Warner designed the Super T10. Ford and Chrysler used the "first design" Super T10 transmissions from 1965 to the early 1970s. The "second design" Super T10 was upgraded as a GM-only version which was used in GM vehicles from 1975 to 1983. Today, Richmond Gear is contracted to build new Super T10 transmissions, which are popular for muscle car restorations, competition and off-roading.

T10 and Super T10 Gear Ratios

Before purchasing our transfer case adapter kits, you must identify which transmission you have. Here are the gear ratios for the different T-10 transmission models:

You can determine your transmission type by counting the grooves/rings on the input shaft. If there are 3 rings on the input shaft of your Borg Warner 4-speed, you have the T10-W transmission. The T10-Y has six grooves, the T10-U has five and the T10-X has two.

Borg Warner T10 vs. Muncie Transmission

These Borg Warner 4-speed transmission models are often compared to the Muncie M21 and M22 transmissions produced from 1963 to 1975. Both are transmissions designed for high-output, heavy-duty applications with excellent durability. The main difference between the Muncie and the Borg Warner 4-speed transmission is that the Muncie has a seven -bolt side cover and the Borg Warner has a nine-bolt side cover. The Muncie also only came with one set of gear ratios.

The T10 / Super T10 transmission adapters we manufacture normally require the installation of a new output shaft. We only offer kits for the Super T10 thin hub and thick hub . This transmission is side-shifted and will require a shift bracket and shift rods. We offer an adapter kit that includes a new main shaft and a 5.75-inch aluminum housing, and the necessary seals and hardware. We do not include a sealed bearing or index retainer in this kit. When ordering this kit, you should also consider a Hurst shifter, shifter bracket and shifter rod kit.

T10 Gear Oil

The recommended gear oil for a Borg Warner T10 or ST10 is 75W90NS GL-4 rated, though 80W90NS is also acceptable. You can use regular or synthetic oil. Do not use GL-5 oil; the brass synchronizers in the transmission will be corroded by the GL-5 additives.
