The clutch disc #716104 is an essential item needed for engine conversions when retaining a Jeep manual transmission with 1” 14 spline input shafts. Jeep utilized a 1” 14 spline input shaft on several of their manual transmissions from 1980 to 2005. These transmissions were typically found behind 4cylinder Wranglers and 2.8 V6 engines found in early XJ Cherokees. The original Jeep clutch disc measured only 9-1/4” in diameter. These clutch discs are too small in diameter to retain with the larger flywheel and pressure plate required during an engine conversion. A Chevy disc also cannot be used since a Chevy clutch disc uses a coarser 1-1/8” 10 spline on their clutch discs. Enter the 716104 clutch disc. The 716104 is essentially a hybrid clutch disc between Chevy and Jeep (14 spline) transmissions. The overall diameter is 10-1/2”, while offering an internal 14 spline hub for the Jeep transmission. The clutch disc is a custom application. There were no OEM clutch applications that offered the exact dimensions. Astro vans apparently used a 14 spline disc; however, the placement of the hub on the disc causes the disc to bind. An 11” version of disc # 716104 is also available under AA part # PN716102.
It should be noted that a 1” 14 spline T5 transmission was also used in some older S-10 vehicles. Please refer to instruction sheet PN712547 for this conversion.
